Redirecting participants from a screener survey to a playtest is an essential part of the playtesting process. It ensures that only qualified participants take part in the playtest, increasing the accuracy of the test results. In this article, we will explain how to set up redirects using webhooks and redirect actions in popular survey tools like Google Forms, Alchemer, and Surveymonkey.

Before we begin, let’s review the basics of webhooks and redirect actions.

Why do we use Webhooks and Redirects Actions?

A webhook is an automated message that is sent from one application to another when an event occurs. In this case, the webhook will send a message to the playtest link, directing the participant to the playtest after they complete the screener survey. Similarly, Redirect actions will also activate upon a certain criteria being met, such as the user reaching the end of your screener survey.

Utilising these tools in this way will keep the participant in a seamless flow where they enter the playtest immediately after qualifying, this will reduce turnaround times on gathering feedback and make the experience simpler for the participant.

To be clear - this guide is going to focus primarily on the redirection of participants, not the actual content of Screeners.

Here are the detailed steps to set up redirects using webhooks or redirect actions in popular survey tools:

We will be covering the following tools:

  • Google Forms

  • Alchemer

  • Qualtrics

  • SurveyMonkey

Google Forms

  1. Create a new Google Form and add the screener questions you need to ask. You can do this by clicking on the “Blank” option or selecting one of the pre-made templates.

  2. After creating the screener questions, click on the “Settings” gear icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.

  3. Click on the “Responses” tab, then toggle on the option to “Collect email addresses”. This will ensure that each participant’s email address is collected along with their responses.

  4. Next, you’ll need to set up a webhook using a third-party tool like Zapier. Zapier connects different web applications together and allows them to communicate with each other.

  5. In Zapier, click on the “Make a Zap” button and select “Google Forms” as the trigger app. Choose the specific form you created and test the connection. Zapier will ask you to fill out a test form to ensure that it’s working correctly.

  6. Next, choose the “Webhooks by Zapier” app as the action app. Select the “POST” method and paste in the playtest link as the URL. Then, map the form data to the appropriate fields in the webhook. For example, you can map the email address field to the “Email” field in the webhook.

  7. Finally, test the webhook and save the Zap. Once someone completes the screener survey, the webhook will automatically send the participant to the playtest link.

Alchemer

  1. Create a new survey in Alchemer or open an existing one.

  2. Once you’ve created your screener survey, go to the “Actions” tab after your final question and click on the “URL Redirect” option.

  3. Enter the URL of the playtest survey in the “URL” field, and click “Add Action”. This will redirect qualified participants to the playtest survey once they’ve successfully completed the screener survey.

  4. If you prefer to use webhooks instead of redirect actions, you can set up a webhook by going to the “Integrations” tab and selecting “Webhooks”.

  5. Click on the “Add Webhook” button and enter the playtest link as the URL. You can also customise the payload format, headers, and other settings if necessary.

  6. Save the webhook, and Alchemer will automatically send a POST request to the playtest link when someone completes the screener survey. The request will include the participant’s responses, so you can use this data to filter out unqualified participants.

  7. Finally, make sure to test the webhook or redirect action to ensure that it’s working correctly. You can do this by completing a test survey and checking if the webhook or redirect action fired successfully.

Surveymonkey

  1. Create a new survey in Surveymonkey and add the screener questions you need to ask. You can do this by clicking on “Create Survey” from your dashboard, and then choosing “Build a Survey”.

  2. After creating the screener questions, click on the “Add Webhook” button and enter the playtest link as the URL. You can also customise the payload format, headers, and other settings if necessary.

  3. Save the webhook, and Surveymonkey will automatically send a POST request to the playtest link when someone completes the screener survey. The request will include the participant’s responses, so you can use this data to filter out unqualified participants.

  4. Finally, make sure to test the webhook to ensure that it’s working correctly. You can do this by completing a test survey and checking if the webhook fired successfully.

Qualtrics

  1. Create a new survey in Qualtrics or open an existing one.

  2. Once you’ve created your screener survey, go to the “Survey Flow” tab and click on the “Add a New Element Here” button.

  3. Select the “Branch” option, and create a new branch that leads to the playtest survey. This will redirect qualified participants to the playtest once they’ve successfully completed the screener survey.

  4. If you prefer to use webhooks instead of a branch, you can set up a webhook by going to the “Data & Analysis” tab and selecting “Webhooks”.

  5. Click on the “Create Webhook” button and enter the playtest link as the URL. You can also customise the payload format, headers, and other settings if necessary.

  6. Save the webhook, and Qualtrics will automatically send a POST request to the playtest link when someone completes the screener survey. The request will include the participant’s responses, so you can use this data to filter out unqualified participants.

  7. Finally, make sure to test the webhook or branch to ensure that it’s working correctly. You can do this by completing a test survey and checking if the webhook or branch fired successfully.

By following these steps, you can set up redirects using webhooks or redirect actions in popular survey tools like Google Forms, Achemer, and Surveymonkey.

These redirects will ensure that only qualified participants take part in your playtest, increasing the accuracy and reliability of your test results
