Recommendations on Device Specifications

An often overlooked factor in testing is the user's device, specifically, if it can perform in a way that ensures a great experience for them, and great feedback for you. You could have every aspect of your test perfectly arranged, but if the participant device can't handle the game, you could lose out on valuable feedback!

Based on years of experience, we recommend recruiting testers with the following minimum device specifications to reduce technical issues and increase the quality of feedback;

Android

We recommend the following device requirements for the majority of Tests.

  • Android OS 10+ (This is required to run our app)

  • A Mid-tier device, some examples of these would be;

    • Google Pixel 6a.

    • OnePlus Nord 2T.

    • Google Pixel 7.

    • Poco X5 Pro.

    • Realme GT 2.

    • Nothing Phone (1)

    • Xiaomi 12T.

    • Motorola Edge 30.

    • Samsung S21

If your game is particularly high end or demanding, you may want to consider aiming for flagship (new, top line) devices.

PC

For PC participants, we recommend the following device specifications;

  • MID-RANGE GAMING PC

    • Intel i7 or equivalent

    • Dedicated GPU (GTX 1060 6GB / GTX 1660 Super or Radeon RX 590)

    • 8GB RAM

If your game is demanding or unoptimized, we recommend increasing specifications to the below, or equivalent;

  • HIGH-END GAMING PC

    • Intel i9 or equivalent

    • Dedicated GPU (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 / AMD RX 6750)

    • 12GB RAM

  • Minimum Operating System: Windows 10 (64 bit)

There are some additional factors to consider when testing too, (such as game optimization) please see this article for more hints and tips on preparing your participants!

Peripherals/Accessories

You may want a Participant to use a specific device to experience your game, specifically, you may want them to use a Gamepad instead of Mouse and Keyboard. We have the following options available, which will integrate within the Participant journey;

  • Gamepad Only (Xbox/PC compatible)

  • Keyboard & Mouse Only

  • Keyboard & Mouse OR Gamepad (Xbox/PC compatible)

Final Thoughts

We recommend including this information in your screening process. Creating a disqualification question based on specifications, or even a free text box to list what device they have allows you to filter the audience in an efficient way. This removes unnecessary troubleshooting with participants that shouldn't be taking part in your playtest!
